Profile:

The only player to complete the double of 500 runs and 50 wickets in one season of the Ranji Trophy, Sunil Joshi is one of the many cricketers who have forced themsevles into the Indian side largely on the basis of their performances around the domestic circuit. A gutsy middle order who has now and then showed a penchant for all out attack in the limited overs game, and an orthdox left arm spinner who has good control over line and length and can really give the ball a healthy tweak, Joshi has been in and out of the national team for some years now.

However, to be fair to Joshi, he has never really enjoyed the confidence of the selectors. But he has it in him to be a match winner as he proved by his mesmeric figures of 10-6-6-5 against South Africa in the tri series game in Kenya at the start of the 1999-2000 season. Recently in the absence of Anil Kumble, he was pitchforked into the role of the side's leading spinner and rose to the occasion with an eight wicket haul in the one off Test against Bangladesh at Dhaka. For good measure, he also got 92 and just missed joining the ranks of Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar as the only Indians to have got a hundred and taken five wickets in an innings in a Test. This has been the highlight of Joshi's chequered career. At the domestic level, he remains one of the stars and played a leading role in Karnataka's Ranji Trophy triumphs in the 90s.
