Khajuraho: Celebrating love

04 May 2008. SITUATED IN Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is known in the world for its magnificent temples, architecture and sculpture. According to the legends, Khaju-ra-ho, means search the way to god (khojo ishwar ki rah ko). Though, these temples are famous for its depiction of kamasutra, there is much more to them.

It nearly took a little more than two centuries to construct these unparalleled works of art, a thousand years ago. In terms of architecture, they form the high peak of the north Indian ’nagara’ style. Of the 85 temples believed to have been built between the ninth and 12th centuries, only 20 have survived.

The legend
The hubs of tourist activities are the temples built by the Chandela Rajputs, who can be traced as descendants of the Moon God. The head of the clan is believed to have been a valiant warrior who fought lions bare-handed (hence the emblem, frequently seen at the temples, of a warrior grappling with a lion); he is said to have ordered the building of the temples as a means of salvation for his mother, Hemvati, who was ravished by the Moon God.

Explaining eroticism
A very unique and important aspect of the temples is the abundance of sculptures that decorate the facades and interiors of the shrines. In this profusion of images, special attention has been paid to divinities, celestial beauties and the female form in general and to graphic sexual representations.

Over the years, a number of explanations have been made for the presence of erotic sculptures at what was essentially a religious centre; no single theory, however, has been able to justify their profuse expressions. Some say these temples were centres of tantrik mysticism, which cite sex as an important component of human development towards the absolute while some believe they were merely a reactionary swing away from the austerities preached by the Buddha. Some scholars say that since Hinduism believes in the efficacy of all four paths to ’moksha’ (dharma, artha, yoga, and kama), these sculptures were provided to assist in the last of these four paths. Since these sculptures are limited to the outer walls of the temples, some people interpret them as a symbolic gate to reaching god.

Must see
One must visit the Western Group of temples – Jain Temple, Baman, Jawari, Dulha Dev and Chaturbhuj temples. People use only Matangeshwar Mahadev temple for worship. Also, don’t miss the sound and light show, which is conducted in the premises of Western group of temples in the evenings.

Hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops mark the entrances to the two distinctive groups of temples; little boys switch from Spanish to French to German to Japanese in rapid succession as they peddle handicrafts or mineral water; signboards, too, are posted in various languages. Private and official guides are available to take you on a tour to these temples while explaining their value and meaning. Government guides have a fixed rate of Rs 350 while you have to bargain with the private ones.

How to reach
There is an international airport at Khajuraho. By road, it’s connected to Satna, the nearest railway station.
